Read FreeAgent contacts, invoices, bills, banking and reports; add contacts, draft invoices, time. Hosted by usefulapi — connect from Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor, or any MCP client.
Team and Enterprise: an Owner adds the connector for the organization first.

}No Add custom MCP server option? It depends on your account or workspace settings: see OpenAI's guide.
Run these commands. The second one opens the login page:
Other MCP clients (Windsurf, Cline, Zed and more): add the URL as a remote MCP server (Streamable HTTP). The client then opens the login page in your browser. Do not add an Authorization header: see Before you connect.
You sign in with your FreeAgent account and approve the access (OAuth). You do not need an API key.
This server reads your contacts, invoices, bills, expenses, bank accounts and transactions, projects, timeslips and reports. It can create and update contacts, create draft invoices (never sent) and log timeslips when you ask it to; it never deletes anything. It can do only what your FreeAgent user is allowed to do. You can revoke access any time in FreeAgent (Settings → Approved apps).
Add only the URL. Do not add an Authorization header or an API key to the client config. The server signs you in with OAuth: you sign in with your FreeAgent account. If the config has such a header, remove it: some clients then send that header instead of the login token, and every call fails with 401.
Turn on the FreeAgent connector, then ask in plain words. The AI picks the tools.
| Tool | Type | What it does |
|---|---|---|
freeagent_get_company | read | Get the company Fetch the FreeAgent company these credentials belong to — name, type (e.g. UkLimitedCompany), currency, start date and VAT registration status. A cheap way to confirm the setup works. FreeAgent: GET /v2/company. |
freeagent_get_current_user | read | Get the current user Fetch the FreeAgent user the token acts as, including their URL (needed for freeagent_create_timeslip) and permission level. FreeAgent: GET /v2/users/me. |
freeagent_get_tax_timeline | read | Get the tax timeline List upcoming tax deadlines and amounts due — VAT returns, corporation tax, self assessment and so on. FreeAgent: GET /v2/company/tax_timeline. |
freeagent_list_contacts | read | List contacts List contacts (clients and suppliers), with their account balance. FreeAgent: GET /v2/contacts. |
freeagent_get_contact | read | Get one contact Fetch a single contact by id or URL. FreeAgent: GET /v2/contacts/:id. |
freeagent_list_invoices | read | List invoices List sales invoices, optionally for one contact or project, filtered by status. FreeAgent: GET /v2/invoices. |
freeagent_get_invoice | read | Get one invoice Fetch a single invoice by id or URL, with its line items, totals, due and paid values. FreeAgent: GET /v2/invoices/:id. |
freeagent_list_bills | read | List bills List supplier bills (purchases), optionally by date range, contact or project, filtered by status. FreeAgent: GET /v2/bills. |
freeagent_list_expenses | read | List expenses List expense claims (out-of-pocket spending and mileage), optionally by date range or project. FreeAgent: GET /v2/expenses. |
freeagent_list_bank_accounts | read | List bank accounts List bank, credit-card and PayPal accounts with their current balances. Use an account's URL with freeagent_list_bank_transactions. FreeAgent: GET /v2/bank_accounts. |
freeagent_list_bank_transactions | read | List bank transactions List the transactions on one bank account, e.g. view=unexplained for what still needs reconciling. FreeAgent: GET /v2/bank_transactions?bank_account=…. |
freeagent_list_projects | read | List projects List projects, optionally for one contact. FreeAgent: GET /v2/projects. |
freeagent_list_tasks | read | List tasks List project tasks with their billing rates, optionally for one project. A task's URL is needed for freeagent_create_timeslip. FreeAgent: GET /v2/tasks. |
freeagent_list_timeslips | read | List timeslips List logged time, optionally by date range, user, task or project; view=unbilled for time not yet invoiced. FreeAgent: GET /v2/timeslips. |
freeagent_get_profit_and_loss | read | Get profit and loss Profit and loss summary — income, expenses, operating and retained profit — for a date range or an accounting period (defaults to the current year to date). FreeAgent: GET /v2/accounting/profit_and_loss/summary. |
freeagent_get_balance_sheet | read | Get the balance sheet Balance sheet — capital and current assets, liabilities and owners' equity — as at a date (default today). FreeAgent: GET /v2/accounting/balance_sheet. |
freeagent_create_contact | write | Create a contact Create a client or supplier contact. Give either organisation_name, or first_name and last_name. FreeAgent: POST /v2/contacts. |
freeagent_update_contact | write | Update a contact Update fields on an existing contact; only the fields you pass change. status=Hidden hides it (reversible with Active). FreeAgent: PUT /v2/contacts/:id. |
freeagent_create_draft_invoice | write | Create a draft invoice Create a sales invoice in DRAFT status. Nothing is sent to the customer and nothing is posted as income until it is marked sent in FreeAgent; a draft can be edited or discarded there. FreeAgent: POST /v2/invoices. |
freeagent_create_timeslip | write | Log a timeslip Log time against a project task for a user. Get the user from freeagent_get_current_user and the task from freeagent_list_tasks. Editable or removable in FreeAgent afterwards. FreeAgent: POST /v2/timeslips. |
freeagent_usage_status | Usage status (free-tier meter) Report the caller's current usage: the plan, calls used this month, the limit of the plan (the free monthly cap or the Pro fair use limit), remaining, and whether the limit is reached. Read-only; does not count against the meter. | |
freeagent_request_feature | Request a missing feature Tell usefulapi that the user needs something the FreeAgent tools cannot do yet (a missing tool, field or filter). Call it only when the user asks for something none of the tools can do, and tell the user that you send the request. Do not call it for errors or for normal requests. Do not include personal data, credentials or customer records. Stored with the product name and the client type (for example Claude or Cursor), without the user's account. At most 5 requests per day. Does not count against the meter. | |
freeagent_upgrade | Upgrade to Pro (unlimited*) Get Pro: unlimited tool calls (fair use limit: 10,000 a month) on FreeAgent (the free tier caps monthly usage). Plans: "monthly" — $9/month; "yearly" — $90/year (2 months free). Cancel any time: Pro then runs to the end of the paid period, so it also suits a one-time job. *A fair use limit applies. For heavy use (near Pro's limit): "plus" or "plus_yearly" — Pro+, $19/month or $190/year, unlimited tool calls (fair use limit: 100,000 a month); an existing Pro subscription changes to Pro+ in place (needs confirm: true; the price difference for the rest of the period is charged at once). Otherwise returns a short link to open in your browser (it opens Stripe Checkout); after payment the account upgrades automatically. Does not count against the meter. | |
freeagent_cancel_subscription | Cancel the Pro subscription Cancel the caller's FreeAgent Pro subscription at the end of the paid period (no refund for the current period; Pro continues until then, then the free tier applies). Requires confirm: true. Run freeagent_upgrade later to undo the cancel before the period ends. Does not count against the meter. |
| Plan | Price | Limit |
|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | 50 tool calls / month |
| Proper user | $9/mo · $90/yr | Unlimited* |
*Pro fair use limit: 10,000 tool calls a month on this server. For more, write to [email protected].
Pro covers this FreeAgent server only. Subscribe with freeagent_upgrade (it returns a Stripe Checkout link). Cancel any time with freeagent_cancel_subscription: Pro continues to the end of the paid period, with no refund for the current period, and running freeagent_upgrade before then undoes the cancel. Or write to [email protected].
No. usefulapi is an independent service. It is not affiliated with or endorsed by FreeAgent. The server calls the FreeAgent API with your own FreeAgent access, so it sees only the data that your account can see.
Yes. In Claude, add this server's URL as a custom connector. In ChatGPT, add it as a custom MCP server in Plugins. Then log in once. Cursor, VS Code, Claude Code and Codex work too. See the setup steps.
A FreeAgent account. You sign in to FreeAgent and approve the access. You do not need an API key.
No. Add only the URL. Do not add an Authorization header or an API key to the client config. The server signs you in with OAuth: you sign in with your FreeAgent account. If the config has such a header, remove it: some clients then send that header instead of the login token, and every call fails with 401.
The login stores them encrypted in the authorization grant of your connection. The server uses them to call the FreeAgent API for you and to derive a private account id for usage metering. usefulapi does not show them on any page or in any reply. You can revoke the access in FreeAgent at any time.
Yes, if you approve it. 4 of the 20 FreeAgent tools can create or change data. The other 16 are marked read-only. Most MCP clients ask you to approve a tool call before it runs.
The Free plan gives 50 tool calls / month. Pro costs $9/mo or $90/yr, with unlimited tool calls (fair use limit: 10,000 tool calls a month), for this FreeAgent server only. Cancel any time: Pro then runs to the end of the paid period. Run freeagent_usage_status to see how many calls you used.
Ask the AI to run freeagent_upgrade: it returns a Stripe Checkout link. To cancel, run freeagent_cancel_subscription. Pro continues to the end of the paid period.
Tell the AI what you wanted to do. It can send the request with freeagent_request_feature. We store the text with the server name, the type of AI client and the tool you tried, not with your account, and read every request when we plan new tools. You can send up to 5 requests per day.
Any client that supports remote MCP servers (Streamable HTTP) with OAuth login: Claude (web and desktop), Claude Code, ChatGPT, Codex, Cursor, VS Code, Windsurf and others.
This is a Model Context Protocol endpoint — meant to be connected from an AI client, not opened in a browser. An invalid_token response at the URL is the auth gate working as designed; clients authenticate automatically.
